The India Meteorological Department ( IMD), issued an orange alert for Punjab and Haryana, predicting continuous rainfall for the next 36 hours starting Monday.
The weather department has placed eight Punjab districts under orange alert, which include parts of north-western Punjab and Malwa. These districts include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Ferozepur.
"Rain activity will continue for the next 36 hours. An orange alert has been issued for Punjab and Haryana. Eight districts of Punjab are under orange alert, which include parts of north-western Punjab and Malwa. We have issued orange alerts today in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, and Ferozepur," IMD Director Surender Paul told ANI.
Paul further said that rain warnings have been issued for areas including Ambala, Panchkula, Kaithal, Karnal, and Hisar in northwestern Haryana.
"Heavy rain warnings have been issued for areas like Ambala, Panchkula, Kaithal, Karnal, and Hisar in north-western Haryana. The weather will clear up around the 8th, but snowfall effects will be seen in the upper areas," added Paul.
Meanwhile, Delhi also received rainfall on Monday, with the IMD predicting one or two spells of rain even on Tuesday. It brough relief from prolonged heat and dust to the national capital.
The weather department said that the showers were a result of a western disturbance affecting the northern plains. The department also noted that fresh snowfall in the Himalayan region is likely to push temperatures down further in the coming days.
From Wednesday onwards, the skies are expected to clear gradually in the national capital. The weekly forecast predicts partly cloudy to mainly clear skies from October 8 to October 12, with daytime temperatures rising back to 32–34 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows staying around 20–22 degrees Celsius.
