From "Ratri" released in 1992 to "Arundhati" starring Anushka Shetty, Telugu cinema has produced numerous horror films. All of these films had some element of horror. Some had a scary element, while others had a compelling story. But "Jatadhara" is so amazing that it lacks any.
This film is so boring from start to finish that when a horror scene arrives, the audience starts laughing instead of getting scared... or rather, they lament their fate. From start to finish, there's no horror element, no decent VFX, and no thrills. Either the film was shot without a story or a screenplay, or it was ruined on the editing table. Sonakshi Sinha, who was eager to be seen in a different role for the first time and was expected to be exceptional, failed once again. Throughout the film, you'll see her screaming or gnashing her teeth, which will make you laugh endlessly. Learn more about this film…
Story
The story revolves around a ghost hunter, Shiva (Sudheer Babu), who doesn't believe in ghosts and spirits but continues to search for them. He has the same strange dream every night, which is linked to his childhood. Meanwhile, there's a village where anyone who goes looking for a golden urn dies. It's said that a treasure is buried in that village, guarded by a demon named Dhan Pisachini (Sonakshi Sinha). Will Shiva be able to reach that village? Will he be able to defeat Dhan Pisachini there? You'll find the answers to these questions by watching the film.
Screenplay and Editing
The story of this film is very interesting to read and hear. It probably sounded great on paper. The visualization is also excellent, but what has appeared on screen is absolutely ridiculous.
The film begins with a five-minute AI-generated scene, which explains the film's backdrop. Just watching this scene kills half your interest. Imagine how it would feel if, in a film made with a budget of ₹70 crore, you were to see scenes you watch for free on Instagram Reels. The film's editing is also utterly terrible. A scene appears out of nowhere, a jump occurs from nowhere, and you're left wondering what's going on.
Acting
Sudheer Babu has put in a lot of effort throughout the film. Whether it's his acting or his looks, his hard work is evident, but there's no one else worth watching. Opposite Sudheer Babu is Divya Khosla. Her dialogue delivery is so slow that even a tortoise would be embarrassed. She seems to overreact in every scene. Sonakshi Sinha had nothing to do here, and what she did was a waste. She has barely three dialogues in the entire film, all of which she delivers through screams. High expectations were high for Shilpa Shirodkar, who delivered good expressions in key scenes, but she didn't get much screen time. Ravi Prakash, Indira Krishna, and Rajiv Kanakala delivered decent performances. Subhalekha Sudhakar, playing the role of a Pandit, had the most and best dialogue delivery in the film.
Direction
It seems as if Abhishek Jaiswal and Venkat Kalyan made this film separately. I'm at a loss as to what the directors intended to convey. They begin the story with a theme that deviates from the ending. They neither present the backstory in a way that shocks the audience nor deliver the climax effectively.
Music
The music and a couple of songs are decent, but sometimes it becomes loud, and sometimes it doesn't match the scene.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The Shiva Tandava performed by Sudheer Babu in the film's climax is the only thing worth watching. What other flaws can I even list? This film doesn't have flaws; it's a film of flaws.
Watch it or not?
If you ask me, I wouldn't want to give even my enemy such a headache. Otherwise, if you're a fan of South Indian films and want to see Sonakshi in a new avatar, you can watch this film.
