Mumbai: The Dahisar police have cracked the mystery behind a pistol that caused panic when a 12-year-old boy accidentally fired it while playing in June. The weapon, it turns out, belonged to a woman with a criminal background — 42-year-old Sangita Nair — who has now been arrested by the Dahisar police.
Boy Mistook Weapon for Toy During House Visit, Accidentally Fired It While Playing
On June 27, a gunshot fired by a 12-year-old boy in Dahisar East’s Gartanpada-2 area triggered alarm. The boy initially told police that he had found the pistol in the trash.
However, both the Dahisar police and the Crime Branch launched a parallel investigation into how a loaded pistol could have landed in the hands of a child. With no CCTV cameras in the area, the probe faced challenges.
Further questioning of the boy revealed a new version of events. On the day of the incident, he had accompanied his maternal aunt — a domestic worker — to a house in the area. While there, he noticed a pistol in a cupboard and mistook it for a toy.
Without informing anyone, he brought it home and later showed it to his friends. While playing with it, he accidentally pulled the trigger and fled the scene in fear, leaving the pistol behind.

She and her husband were previously arrested by Kalachowki police in 2029 in connection with a theft case, and were even booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). After securing bail, Nair resumed normal life, but when she discovered the pistol from her home had been recovered by police, she absconded.
