Roy Keane 'driven mad' by Man Utd star Ruben Amorim has U-turned on

Send Push

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has already expressed his opinion on the newly reintroduced Tyrell Malacia after he returned to the first-team squad this week. The Dutch full-back was one of five players who created a 'Bomb Squad' at Carrington at the beginning of the summer transfer window.

Malacia, along with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, all requested to leave the club before the window closed. Four of those members managed to solidify moves away but Malacia's switch to La Liga club Elche fell through.

When most of the European windows closed on September 1, it was mooted that Malacia could be sold to Turkey however it was claimed that a switch to Eyupspor was blocked by the player. Now, after undertaking an individual training plan away from the club, Malacia is being reintroduced into the first-team fold with sessions among the U21s being used as a starting point.

The return of Malacia into the first-team picture again will likely be received with a mixed reaction from United supporters. The defender spent the entirety of the 2023/24 season out injured and was signed by Erik ten Hag for a completely different system.

However, there is no point having a player on the books who is not going to be involved with the first-team, so United will be attempting to get their money's worth out of him. Whether or not Keane will be happy to see him back as an option is a different matter.

Back in January 2023, Keane was livid with Malaciafor his lack of concentration in the FA Cup fourth round clash with then-Championship club, Reading. With the score goalless at the break, the Dutchman was put under the microscope by Keane after he failed to spot Junior Hoilett lurking at the back post.

Unleashing his thoughts, Keane told ITV Sport at the time: "Honestly, what are these defenders thinking? It drives me mad, it’s like he [Malacia] is surprised somebody is next to him.

"Just switch on, be aware of what’s around you on a football pitch. Drives me crazy."

The last thing United will need is more indecision in the defensive line following the 3-1 defeat to Brentford. That loss and the mistakes made in it, has led to pressure mounting on Ruben Amorim and talk building around his future in Manchester.

Gareth Southgate is one of the names supposedly being lined up to replace Amorim should Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos decide that enough is enough. For now though, it seems Amorim will be in charge for the visit of Sunderland this weekend.
