Dexter fans have been left devastated as a highly-anticipated prequel series has been axed - despite a second season already being announced.
Dexter: Original Sin's first series was a huge hit when it came out in December 2024 and it became Showtime's most-streamed show premiere ever recorded at the time of its release.
Set in the nineties, the prequel explored how serial killer Dexter Morgan - first introduced to audiences in long-running crime series Dexter - came to be. However, Variety reports that Paramount has now backtracked on going ahead with series two just months after it was announced back in April.
Paramount is now reportedly planning to explore a second season of Dexter follow-up series, Dexter: Resurrection, as well as spin-off Dexter: New Blood. Both star Michael C. Hall as the eponymous killer, while the now-cancelled prequel starred Patrick Gibson in the role of Dexter instead, while Hall served only as a narrator.

Original Sin also boasted a glittering supporting cast, including Christian Slater (Mr Robot, Blink Twice), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy, Cruel Intentions) and Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy, Enchanted).
Responding to the cancellation news, one fan fumed: "Ugh, and the cast was so good! Specially Paddy as Dexter. Maybe this cast can appear on Dexter: Resurrection as flashbacks."
Another called it a "horrible decision", adding: "I don’t see Dexter: Resurrection being as good as this because Dexter: New Blood was a** let’s keep it lit. Seeing the past was a better concept."
Meanwhile a third Dexter fan said it was "hard to replace the original" show, while a fourth penned: "I’m a huge Dexter fan…but I’m not mad at this. I’d watch it if continued, but I feel it diluted the series. Resurrection is GREAT!"
"Really liked the cast and with the success of Resurrection, disappointing outcome," one fan of the prequel shared, as another lamented: "Wow, that's actually sad."
They continued: "There could have been more story to be told, and the one character I was hoping to see was Captain Thomas Matthew and to see more of how Dexter adapts as a killer. Also, I thought Patrick Gibson did an outstanding job playing a younger Dexter Morgan."
All eight seasons of Dexter are available to stream on Netflix while Dexter: Original Sin is streaming now on Paramount+
