Before the start of the second T20I between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, both teams paused to observe a minute’s silence in memory of young Australian cricketer Ben Austin, who tragically passed away on October 30. The players from both sides also took the field wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
Ben Austin, a 17-year-old promising cricketer from Melbourne, suffered a fatal neck injury during practice on October 29. Despite being rushed for medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries a day later. His untimely death has deeply saddened the Australian cricket community, with condolences pouring in from fans, teammates, and cricket boards across the country.
The emotional tribute at the MCG saw players and spectators stand in silence, creating a moment of reflection and unity in honor of the young player’s memory. The official handle of Cricket Australia also shared a heartfelt post, captioned “For Ben ❤️”, recognizing his passion and potential for the game.
Following the tribute, play resumed with Australia winning the toss and opting to bowl first. However, the match started poorly for India, who lost four wickets for just 32 runs. Josh Hazlewood led the charge for Australia, taking three crucial wickets, including that of captain Suryakumar Yadav.
The five-match T20I series continues to hold importance for both teams, but the Melbourne game will be remembered not only for the cricket on display but also for the moving tribute paid to a young life lost too soon.
