Islamabad/Kabul: After days of violent clashes between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban, both sides have agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire. The ceasefire came into effect at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Dozens of people were killed and over 100 injured on both sides in days of ground and air fighting. This was the worst period of violence between Pakistan and Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021. Heavy fighting erupted on Wednesday before the ceasefire. Meanwhile, the question remains as to how long the latest ceasefire will last.

Announcing the ceasefire, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry stated that its aim was to reduce hostilities and open the way for dialogue following the recent flare-up of fighting along the volatile border. According to the statement, both sides agreed to make sincere efforts to find a positive solution to the issue, which Islamabad described as complex but solvable.

Pakistan had pleaded for a ceasefire

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Kabul has instructed its forces to adhere to a ceasefire, but for this Pakistan will have to refrain from aggression. Zabihullah said that the ceasefire was requested by the Pakistani side. The Taliban administration said that on Wednesday morning, the Pakistan Air Force carried out a major airstrike in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar, killing at least 12 civilians. More than 100 people were injured in this attack and a large number of houses were damaged.

The conflict began last week with a Pakistani airstrike on Kabul, reportedly targeting TTP chief Noor Wali Mehsud. Pakistan alleges that TTP members are operating from safe havens across the border. However, the Afghan Taliban has consistently denied these allegations and described terrorism as an internal problem of Pakistan. The Taliban has accused Pakistan of harboring ISIS-linked terrorists to spread misinformation, incite tensions, and destabilize Afghanistan. The Pakistani military denies these allegations.

Insult to Pakistani Army

The latest clash with the Afghan Taliban has caused embarrassment for the Pakistani military. Taliban fighters claim to have killed a large number of Pakistani soldiers and seized their weapons and armored vehicles. A video circulating on social media allegedly shows Taliban fighters riding a Pakistani T-55 tank, which the Taliban reportedly captured during clashes in Kandahar.

International concern over the clash

Violent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan have alarmed the international community. China has appealed for the safety of its citizens and investments. Russia has urged restraint on both sides, while US President Donald Trump has offered to mediate to end the conflict. Following increased Taliban attacks, Pakistan has appealed to Qatar and Saudi Arabia for intervention and help stop the conflict.
