“We Are Not Enemies”: Mehbooba Mufti Praises India-Pakistan Cricket Move, Urges Dialogue Over Conflict

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has stirred political debate by welcoming the Centre’s decision to resume cricket ties with Pakistan, saying it’s a “good step” and a signal that dialogue—not hostility—must guide India’s approach toward its neighbor.

“India Took the Right Step by Agreeing to Play Cricket”

Addressing reporters, Mehbooba said, “India has done well by agreeing to play cricket with Pakistan. We are not enemies. If peace is the goal, the government should initiate dialogue. War will lead us nowhere.” She emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in a unique position to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir issue, calling on the Centre to move from confrontation to conversation.

Reiterating her party’s slogan—“Aman Ki Baat, Izzat Ke Saath”—she recalled the PDP’s foundation during the peak of militancy in the region. “At that time, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed stood against the Task Force culture and spoke about peace and coexistence. That vision is still relevant today,” she added.

“War Will Destroy Kashmir More Than Anywhere Else”

Mufti warned that another war would devastate Jammu and Kashmir far more than any other region in the country. “Foreign policy decisions impact us directly. Don’t tell us it’s none of our concern. We are the first to suffer,” she said.

“India Should Focus on Youth, Not Bombs”

Taking a dig at India’s economic and military priorities, Mehbooba said, “China has surged ahead in GDP while we are stuck buying bombs and missiles. Pakistan’s economy is in crisis, yet we seem to be entering the same trap. India has youth power—why aren’t we investing in that?”

“Only Modi Ji Can Solve the Kashmir Issue”

Reflecting on past efforts by Indian leaders, she said, “Indira Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, even Manmohan Singh took bold steps for peace. But Modi ji alone has the mandate and strength today to solve this long-standing issue. I still believe Delhi must recognize this.”

Questions Over SIR and Targeting of Muslims

Mufti also criticized the Special Intensive Review (SIR) drive currently underway in Bihar, alleging it unfairly targets Muslims and migrants. “You’ve launched SIR and talk about throwing Rohingyas into the sea. Is this the direction we’re headed in?” she asked.
