Fabric softener builds up on towels over time, causing a waxy type of film that will eventually make your towels water repellent, which means your towels will no longer dry you. It is the buildup of washing powders and fabric softeners, and mineral deposits that make towels hard and also make them go grey over time.
Washing towels with white vinegar is an age-old hack that has been used by homeowners to keep their towels clean, fluffy, and fresh, and to keep them looking like the day they were purchased. However, some have not found success after using this acidic liquid. If this is the case for you, luxury linen retailer Hotel At Home has shared a different natural solution that you may favour more than white vinegar.

For this method, they claim that all you need to add to your washing machine cycle is soda crystals mixed with water.
In the jug, pour one-and-a-half cups of soda crystals, sometimes called washing soda, and half fill the jug with very hot water.
Mix the solution until the powder mixture has completely dissolved. Pour this mixture into a two-litre bottle and then fill the rest of the bottle with water.
To use your homemade water softener, add one cup to each load of laundry. For "particularly crunchy towels", you may need to add two cups of the mixture.
Place towels in the washing machine, but do not wash too many at once. Overloading the washing machine prevents towels from being rinsed thoroughly and can also cause them to become stiff.
Wash the towels at 60 degrees and shake them thoroughly before hanging them up to dry, as it helps loosen fibres and restore fluffiness.
Once your towels have dried, they will be restored to their original state, so you can enjoy comfortable towels that do not feel hard or rough when used.
Alternatively, households can soak their stiff towels in a medium-strength mixture of soda crystals and warm water. Rinse well, then wash them as normal.
Express.co.uk previously put soda crystals to the test on stiff towels and found the towels felt softer instantly, even before drying.
