The highest village in the UK is picturesque and quaint, but also named after its dark past. It is surrounded by sweeping countryside views looking over three counties and is often hit by snow over the winter months.
Flash is located in the parish of Quarnford, on the southern slope of Axe Edge Moor in Staffordshire. It sits 1,514 feet (460 metres) above sea level and boasts stunning views of the Staffordshire moorland, the Cheshire plain, and the Derbyshire hills. The village also has a colourful past, with its slightly bizarre name due to its history of illegal activity.
Flash had a reputation for being a centre for cock fighting and prize fighting. Counterfeiting was also a common practice in the village, with the fake money referred to as "flash money" - hence the village's name.
Flash is also home to the highest pub in England, The New Inn. There is also the Flash Bar Stores which is the highest shop in the nation.
The village also benefits from being close to the Three Shires Head. The beauty spot is where three counties meet, with a number of waterfalls and stone bridges.
Flash has a small population and is quite an isolated community. However, it is very peaceful and scenic, with many quiet lanes and traditional farmhouses dating back centuries.
During the winter months, Flash is more susceptible to snowfall and cold weather. It experiences snow on an average of 1-3 days per month during winter.
For those looking to visit the village, it is easiest to take a train to nearby Buxton before taking a bus. Flash is also accessible by car via the A53.
On Flash, Let's Go Peak District said: "The past industry of the village was primarily coalmining, with records dating back to 1401 and the mining of coal in Black Brook.
"The population has always been small but it dwindled further with the demise of the mining industry, and by the end of the 1800s less than 400 people lived in the village, made up of colliers, agricultural labourers and silk workers.
"Perhaps because of the village's isolated location and relative poverty, it had a reputation as being something of a lawless place in olden days, frequented by rough characters.
"Flash was known for illegal activities such as cock-fighting, prize fighting and counterfeiting, and for many years counterfeit money was known as 'Flash money'."
